What to Expect: The Return-to-Duty Process

The DOT return-to-duty process follows a federally mandated sequence. Joel handles the entire process — efficiently, professionally, and without unnecessary red tape.

1

Initial Evaluation

A comprehensive face-to-face assessment — including a full biopsychosocial review and clinical screening — to determine the steps required under DOT regulations before you can return to duty. Bring your driver's license and a form of payment. Joel handles everything else.

2

Recommendation & Referral

Joel provides a formal written recommendation outlining any education or program requirements you must complete to satisfy DOT compliance. Many clients are able to avoid more intensive programs entirely.

3

Follow-Up Evaluation

After completing your requirements, you return for a follow-up evaluation to verify compliance and confirm you have the tools and support needed to maintain your progress. Your employer is kept informed throughout.

4

Return to Duty

Joel provides the documentation your employer needs to authorize your return to safety-sensitive duties, along with a follow-up testing plan as required by DOT regulations.

Nearly 20 Years. Hundreds of Workers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from DOT workers navigating the return-to-duty process.

How quickly can I get an appointment?
Most clients get an appointment the very same day they call. Joel prioritizes getting you scheduled quickly because every day you're not working matters. Call (201) 259-7229 or fill out the form above and we'll be in touch promptly.
How long until I can return to work?
The timeline varies depending on your specific situation and the requirements determined in your evaluation. That said, many clients are able to return to work the same week as their evaluation. Joel works efficiently to move you through the process as quickly as DOT regulations allow — with no unnecessary delays.
What do I need to bring to my evaluation?
Just your driver's license and a form of payment. Joel takes care of the rest. The evaluation itself is a thorough but straightforward process — he'll walk you through everything during your appointment.
Can I complete my evaluation virtually?
Yes. Virtual (telehealth) evaluations are available for clients throughout the United States, making it easy to get started regardless of where you're located. Virtual evaluations are conducted via a secure video platform and are fully compliant with DOT requirements. In-person appointments are also available at the Verona, NJ office.
Will my employer be notified?
Yes — DOT regulations require that your employer be informed at each stage of the process. However, the details of your evaluation and personal health information are maintained confidentially in Joel's electronic health record system. Records are also preserved long-term, so if you need them sent to a new employer years from now, they're always accessible.
Do you work with all DOT agencies?
Yes. Joel works with employees regulated under all major DOT agencies — FMCSA (trucking), FAA (aviation), FRA (railroad), FTA (transit), PHMSA (pipeline), and USCG (Coast Guard). If you're in a federally-regulated, safety-sensitive position, Joel can help.
